MAINE ARTIST WINS HONORABLE MENTION IN NATIONAL JURIED VETERAN ART SHOW
Shawna N.M. Barnes, a disabled OIF Veteran, has been awarded Honorable Mention for her sculpture, Doc the Ambulance Dog, in the national juried Veteran art exhibit “The Incredible Feet”. Doc is based on an actual working Red Cross Ambulance Dog from WWI/WWII and is part of her “Animals of War” series.
When asked, Shawna had this to say about her achievement; “It feels like an amazing way for Doc to enter the public arena. This exhibit is the first time the public will get to see a piece from my “Animals of War” series and I couldn’t be more thrilled. It comes at a perfect time to help not only celebrate Veteran’s Day this year, but my own time as a combat medic in the Army as well. There’s a reason an ambulance dog was the first piece I created when I dreamed up the idea of this series.”
Shawna found art therapeutic after her medical retirement from the military in 2011. Since then, she has been honing her self-taught sculpting skills in her basement studio at her home in Knox, Maine. “The Incredible Feet” exhibition marks the 6th national show where her work has been on display across the country.
“Doc the Ambulance Dog” is a ceramic sculpture measuring 12” h x 5” w x 10” d. Finished with acrylic paint and pan pastels, Shawna was able to draw out incredible personality in Doc’s facial features. Her attention to even the most minute details is inspiring.
“The Incredible Feet” is hosted by the Veteran’s Art Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. The show will be on display from 11 November 2017 through the end of December. If you are in Grand Junction, Colorado; you can view the grand opening at the The Historic Avalon Theatre. The exhibit will then be moved to the Veterans Art Center Gallery at 307 S 12th Street in Grand Junction, Colorado, and will be on display until late December.
